A long overdue house updates post!

Hi friends!  Whew, I am riding high on that Tiger victory Monday night! I grew up and LSU fan and went there for both undergrad and law school so you know I am a big fan!  I know I will probably never see as magical of a year as this was again and I feel so lucky.  I still can't believe it happened and I got to experience it all with my favorite Tiger fan, Kevin!  This has been quite a lovely 5 months!

Well, I have been in my house for awhile now and I though I would share the cosmetic updates I have done to some of it.  The backyard is still a disaster but I hope to have that all squared away by Jazz Fest.  I did all of the work myself with some friend and Kevin help, except for installing the new microwave and light fixtures for which I hired a professional.

Once I save up some money I am going to do some real upgrades, but these were perfect to make it livable and not feel like the rental that it has been for the past 20 years.  I really wanted to get new appliances, but as my mom said, "They work!  Enjoy them while they last and don't cost money!"  Here we go!

Here is the kitchen before:

Very stark!
And here is the kitchen after:

So much warmer!

The cabinets are more sage than they look
  • I painted all the walls in the house Chic Gray by Behr.  It is a true gray and I really love it!
  • I painted my all of my cabinets in the kitchen and bath with Nuvo Cabinet paint.  This could not have been easier.  I just cleaned my cabinets, ran some sandpaper over them and then painted!
  • The top kitchen cabinets are Coconut Espresso.  The name is a bit misleading as they came out practically white.  I like how they came out though!  I had to do three coats.
  • The bottom kitchen cabinets are Olde Sage.  They came out very true to color and I love the way they look!  I only had to do two coats with this one.
  • I highly suggest you get some of these of these painter's tripods if you are painting cabinets. It was a lifesaver!
  • My cabinet knobs were stupid cheap at Amazon.  They look so great!  I had to get some extra washers to make sure they fit my cabinets.
  • The open shelving is from Etsy

Now on to the bathroom.   Like the kitchen, it was very stark before...

And after, so much warmer!

It looks like someone actually lives here now!
I love the way the cabinets and the faucet came out!
The light fixture looks great too!
That is an Audubon print.  I love how elegant it is!
And this is where I hang my towel.  I need to paint that wall still, there is a long story about getting lightly electrocuted involved...

I love my new faucet!

I got new floors in my bedroom too.  I had old fake hardwood floors that were not original to the house that were buckling at the back door.  My friend's brother is a contractor and told me I should get some Coretec Premium Plus vinyl floors as they are waterproof and look so much like wood.   I did not believe him at first until I tried a sample.  OMG y'all, they are so much like real wood you cannot tell!  And they really are waterproof.  Perfect for when I take Bitsy out in the rain!

Before: the fake floors trying and failing to fit in with my beautiful original floors.

After:  Matching the new addition and my French Country bedroom style!

Well actually, during!
I spent $2,000 on the floors and install (reminder, I live in a double and had two rooms to do) and less than $1,000 on all the paint and new fixtures.  It feels like a new house for only $3,000!  Paint will do wonders!  I hope to spend about that or a little more to fancy up my backyard when spring hits.  DIY is key!

If you have been wanting to paint your cabinets, do it!  I had two friends over and we knocked out the kitchen and bath cabinets in about 5 hours including drying time!

Happy Cooking!
