Recapping the Weekend- Yummy Birthday Fun!

Hello Friends!  How was your weekend?  I had a lot of fun with friends and also celebrating Gentleman Caller's birthday.  He enjoyed his yummy dinner and gifts and I enjoyed spoiling him!  Linking up with Biana for weekending.  Here we go!

Friday after work, the work besties (and some who have left work) and I went to Happy Hour at my favorite, the Rusty Nail.  We also met up with some guys we used to work with.  And as usual, trouble ensued...

They were really yummy at least!

Saturday was full of errands and then an evening of fun with Gentleman Caller.  I gave him the main part of his present, a bike, in addition to the beautiful picture I captured of him and his sons at the beach.  Then we went for cocktails at Cure, and dinner at Clancy's.  It was amazing as usual. Simple good food and excellent service.
We had to get the fried oysters with brie!
He got the pork chop with yummy accoutrements.  I had to steal some greens!
I got the smoked duck.  Holy Cow it was good!  I put the leftovers in a salad the next day too!
We had a great time!
I had a homey sunday of doing things around the house since I am hosting a happy hour this week and book club soon.  I also went to the 504 Craft Beer Reserve for the first time as Gentleman Caller always raves about it.  Got a few yummy beers to enjoy.

This was so yummy!

We met up with my oldest friend and her husband for a Tales of the Cocktail event.  I created this post early before that so you only got to see it on instagram.  Follow me there missyquiggs.

So there you have it.  Yummy and fun!  What did you get into?  Let me know in the comments! See you back her tomorrow with some more yummy food!

Happy Monday!

Five for Friday-Fun times in July

Hey y'all.  Happy Friday!  Linking up with Amanda for Friday Favorites.  She had a big influence on number four in today's post!   It has been a long week of work and fun, and there is bound to be more fun because...

ONE:

Today is Gentleman Caller's Birthday!  We are going to a fancy dinner tomorrow night at Clancy's and I have two awesome gifts for him.  I cannot wait to celebrate and see his reaction to the gifts and to one of my favorite restaurants he has never tried.  And I get to stop being two years older than him until my next birthday!

TWO:

We also celebrated a year of dating on Tuesday.  That certainly flew by! I got some pretty flowers that I am not allergic to and we went to a fun Tales of the Cocktail event at the Southern Food and Beverage Museum to celebrate.  We also got in the newspaper, well the online version! (we are in pic #5.)

There was not enough food to counteract all the cocktails so we went for dinner after.  Much better lighting at Casa Borrega than the article photo!

THREE:

Have you ever heard of Thai rolled ice cream?  We just had one open and I am dying to take some borrowed kids soon so I can blame my ice cream craving on them!  Sounds like it is time to offer one of my sisters' some long overdue overnight babysitting!

FOUR:

I got my Nordstrom Haul!  Here are some of my scores, most of these items are under $50. I don't do affiliate links for clothes (or really anything anymore) so I am just linking in case you like something and want to see if they are sold out. I don't know what happened with these photos upon publishing.

A great look for work, already wore it! Shirt, skirt and pumps

Can't wait for fall to wear this! Shirt, jeans (sorry sold out), shoes (got them on Prime Day)
I need a tank for my fave tunic!  Man those Spanx leggings are hard to get on!
Again, I am not sure why these pics turned out larger than I intended! iPhone's are wonky!

FIVE:

Next week I am taking a mental and physical health day to get a much needed massage.  My body has been aching everywhere and my legs are so sore.  I think I am just getting old or maybe I am not drinking enough water.  This excellent skincare post by Lindsay at Bourbon Lipsticks and Stilettos was a good reminder this week to get back on the hydration train!

Well there you have it! I hope you have a fabulous weekend! What are your plans?  How was your week?

Happy Cooking!

A rant about food blogging and good stuff from the comments (Steel cut oatmeal banana breakfast bites)

It took me a long time to draft and publish this post because I was not proud of how it came out.  The post I mean, not the recipe.  What is hard for a food blogger with a full time job is timing.  My photography teacher taught us that sometimes the shot just isn't there and you have to come back at a better time to take the picture.  Well, that is hard to do when you are creating a recipe from scratch with limited ingredients and the sunny day suddenly turns to rain!  I don't have much day time to do my blogging since my lawyering gig pays all the bills, so I try to cook a lot on the weekends when there is sun so this space looks pretty.  I tried to do that for this one, but the sun would not cooperate and it just looks dark.  I wish this was my full time job sometimes!

I was looking for a way to use up my Trader Joe's Steel Cut oats and went looking for what others had done with them.  A good resource for Trader Joe's shopping is the aptly named What's Good At Trader Joe's blog.  And in their post about the steel cut oatmeal, there was a comment that inspired me by a lady named Beth.  I say a lady because I clicked to her profile and she doesn't have a blog.

Well I do, and I needed breakfast; so I decided to recreate her recipe.  It seemed so simple and she claimed they are only 2 Weight Watcher's points apiece.  She was right about the delicious, but I had to have two for breakfast to keep me from gnawing on everything in sight!  Like the overnight oats, these are WAY better heated up, but watch the chocolate, it can get a little messy. And if you don't like banana's, don't make this!  Full recipe to follow the montage.

Cute and portable, just like I like a breakfast.

Not your usual boring old cereal! (Breakfast Cereal Peanut Butter Protein Bites)

I used to be a religious green smoothie in the morning girl.  Then I had a mishap one week and bought the wrong protein powder, spilled one all over my bathroom wall and then stained the interior of my car with one.  We needed a break, my green smoothies and I! I have been trying out various breakfast alternatives and was looking for inspiration.  I was browsing one of my blogs I follow regularly, Borrowed Heaven, and she had a fun breakfast idea that I knew I could customize for my pantry!

I decided to add a little healthiness to the party by adding chia seeds.  I halfway regretted it while I was making them, but it turned out great!  Even my 6 year old nephew and 1 year old niece ate them without asking what it was!  All you can taste here is the sweet peanut butter.  The Kashi Go Lean cereal was a great base, and they stayed crunchy for a whole week!  Try these, you and your family will love them!  Try other cereals and mix ins; make it your own!  Full recipe to follow the montage. Linking up with Meal Plan Monday over at Southern Plate and others!

These are surprisingly filling for how small they are!

Five for Friday-What an expensive week!

Hi friends!  Happy Friday!  With Prime Day and Nordstrom Sale, it has been an expensive week.  Get here soon Mr. Postman, please!  Linking up with Amanda for Friday Favorites.  She is the reason I have two pairs of shoes heading my way!  Let's get down to it shall we?

ONE:

My five favorite things from the Nordstrom haul:

This one caught my eye when the catalog came!
I needed new work pumps and decided to get a nice pair

These Spanx faux leather leggings will be on me all fall!

This is my all time favorite shirt, I already have it in teal and black.

New workout pants to treat myself for working out 6 days a week!
I also got my favorite bra, a sports bra, some jeans and a cute work outfit.  Can't wait to get it all! Did you shop?  What are some of your favorites?

TWO:

It is election qualifying week here in New Orleans.  I am super interested in it as I work in local government and it affects my job.  I was a bit taken aback by this fellow who is running for mayor. It was interesting to say the least.

THREE:

In case you missed it this week, I made something real pretty I had to show off!  Make this this summer while you have the all that zucchini you always complain about having too much of!

FOUR:

I went and saw Roxane Gay talk about her new book, Hunger, with my baby sister Wednesday night. I was fascinated but her candor about so many things, but what she said about quitting smoking really hit home for me.  She quit 9 years ago and I quit almost 5 years ago (August 8th is my quit day).  It is still a struggle every dang day and she made me feel better that I am not alone.  As she said, "Oh man I miss that every day."  I still do too most days, it is so weird.  But you know what is easier than missing smoking?  Breathing.  Running.  Taking the stairs.  Mind over matter is a powerful thing!  Do you struggle with something like that?

FIVE:

I have my "less serious" Book Club this weekend!  I love these ladies!  We read Sellevision by Augusten Burroughs.  It was a throwback hit!  We are having a slumber party brunch and maybe some pool time if the weather holds out, fingers crossed.  Then it is the Game of Thrones Final season premiere with Gentleman Caller.  I am so sad it is almost over! Do you watch or read?

Well there you have it!  Hope you have a fantastic weekend filled with friends and/or family and fun! See you next week!

Happy Cooking!

A revisit to recipes and houses past (Brussels sprouts salad with apples, cranberries and white cheddar)

I was trying to brainstorm one day to make something new for lunch.  And all I wanted was something I had before.  Brussels Sprouts!  Linking up with Meal Plan Monday over at Southern Plate and others!

I have made this salad before.  It was not well executed.  And wow this blog and my housing situation has come a long way since that post!  I pre dressed the salad and kind of ruined it for my usual m.o. of cooking once and trying to eat 4 times for lunch.  I get a craving for brussels sprouts and green apples often and it struck.  I remembered the little salad that tried and decided to make it again, but better.  I succeeded.

I didn't try to follow the directions of wilting the brussels sprouts with dressing ahead of time and decided to love them as they are, crunchy and fresh.  It was a smart decision.  I successfully ate it for 4 days and did not offend my coworkers! This salad would be an amazing entertaining salad too with or without the chicken. If you make it with the intention of eating it right away, go ahead and pre dress. Try it out for yourself, it is crisp, tangy and filling.  Perfect for lunch!  Full recipe to follow the montage.

One day I am going to bring my camera to work and not have a crappy iPhone SE photo of lunch!

A dish almost too pretty to eat (Summer veggie Ratatouille like the movie)

Hi friends!  No recap post of this weekend because I did not have my phone with me all weekend! So now, here we are back on Tuesday with yummy food!

I am the resident mac and cheese maker for family gatherings.  People love it and the best part is there are never leftovers to take home and tempt me.  For Father's Day there was a much lighter crowd and I am doing the Eat Local Challenge so I decided to use what I had on hand and make something a little healthier.  I had eggplant, zucchini, squash and tomatoes.  Sounded like a perfect opportunity for ratatouille to me!

I decide to make it fancy like a food blogger should and fan out the veggies like I hear they do in the movie.  Had I planned on this dish and didn't have wonky produce from someone's garden, I would have gotten bigger zucchinis to make it even.  But, mine were smaller, as was the neck of the squash, so I made do.  I also forgot the bell pepper, but we did not miss it.

This takes a but of time, but the taste and presentation are so worth it! I did this over two days. I did all the slicing and onion cooking the night before and refrigerated and then assembled and baked the next morning.  I toted it the hour to my grandmother's house and reheated it for 10 minutes to get it hot.  There were no seconds of this to be had even with the reduced crowd. everyone raved about how great it tasted.  Except my odd parents that refused to try it.  Where did I come from?  Try this, it screams summer and is so delightful!  Full recipe to follow the montage.  Linking up with Meal Plan Monday over at Southern Plate and others!

Beautiful Ratatouille like the movie!
I just love pretty dishes like this!

Recapping the week- 4th of July beach fun and recovery!

Hello!  It has been a while! Feels weird to be recapping the weekend on a Friday.  What could be better than a 4 day weekend? Taking a few days away from blogging after to get caught up on life after! I went to the beach for the holiday weekend with Gentleman Caller and his kids to meet my extended family for our annual beach trip.  We crammed a lot of fun into a long weekend and then had some fun with my friends for some NOLA style actual fireworks for the 4th.  It's Friday so I am linking up with Amanda for Friday Favorites as usual.  Let's get to the pic heavy recap!

The water was not a pretty color.  The kids and uncles enjoyed building sandcastles anyway!
Miss Ruby got some time on the beach too.  It seems like we have a new infant there every year!
Some of the men caught some pretty fish!
Saturday night headbandz!  The kids had a blast!
Sunday night we went next door to the Gulf for a family dinner.  These kids!
I taught my mom how to use manual mode on the fly for this rare non selfie with Gentleman Caller!
I came back into town and decided to smoke a beer can chicken.  Recipe to come, it was glorious!

Look at that crisp skin!
For the Actual 4th, we went to my friend Kristen, the Jambalaya Girl's house across the river for a hot dog party and fireworks overlooking the City.

What a spread!  The make your own dogs were such a hit!
That is St. Louis Cathedral in the lower left area.  This does not do it justice!
Last night I did a yoga class put on by Lululemon's "This is yoga" campaign at Crescent Park to get myself right.  If you don't do yoga, you should try it, so good for the soul!  This class was donation based to support Project Peaceful Warriors.  I plan on supporting them more often, it's a really cool non profit!

What a lovely view for some namaste!
It was a lot of catching up with the house, blogging and exercise when I got home, so no time to post! And my car has to go back in the shop today, ugh!  But, nothing like a short week, here we are with another weekend already and more fun to come!  Hope you had a happy 4th, a great short week and have a fabulous weekend!  What are you up to?

Happy Cooking!
